Silicon carbide is an inorganic substance with the chemical formula of SiC. It is made by smelting quartz sand,
petroleum coke ( or coal coke ), wood chips ( salt is needed to produce green silicon carbide) and other raw
materials in a resistance furnace at high temperature. Silicon carbide also exists in nature as a rare mineral,
mullite. Among C, N, B and other non oxide high-tech refractory materials, silicon carbide is the most widely
used and economical one, which can be called emery or refractory sand. The silicon carbide produced in
China is divided into black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide, both of which are hexagonal crystals,
with a specific gravity of 3.20 ~ 3.25 and a microhardness of 2840 ~ 3320.
