Transformer oil: it is a fractionation product of petroleum, and its main components are alkanes, naphthenic saturated hydrocarbons, aromatic unsaturated hydrocarbons and other compounds. It is commonly known as square shed oil,
a light yellow transparent liquid with a relative density of 0.895. Freezing point<- 45 ºC.

Transformer oil is a kind of mineral oil obtained from distillation and refining of natural oil. It is a mixture of pure, stable,
 low viscosity, good insulation and good cooling liquid natural hydrocarbons obtained from lubricating oil distillates in
oil through acid and alkali refining. Commonly known as square shed oil, light yellow transparent liquid.
 

Function:

(1) Insulation function: transformer oil has much
higher insulation strength than air. The insulating
material immersed in oil can not only improve the
insulating strength,but  also prevent the erosion
of moisture.

(2) Heat dissipation: the specific heat of transformer
oil is large, and it is often used as coolant. The heat   
generated during the operation of the transformer
causes the oil close to the iron core and winding to
expand and rise when heated. Through the up and
down convection of the oil, the heat is dissipated
through the radiator to ensure the normal operation
of the transformer.

(3) Arc suppression function: on the on load voltage   
regulating switch of the oil circuit breaker and transformer,
the contact will produce an arc when switching. Due
to the good thermal conductivity of transformer oil,
and under the action of high temperature of the arc,
it can separate a large amount of gas and generate
greater pressure, which improves the arc extinguishing   
performance of the medium and makes the arc
extinguish quickly.

1. The oil in the transformer mainly plays the role of
heat dissipation and cooling during operation;

2. Insulate and maintain the windings (keep good
insulation state);

3. The transformer oil plays the role of arc suppression
at the high-voltage leads and tap changer contact points
to prevent corona and arc discharge;

4. Transformer oil is widely used as a liquid seal in
hydraulic safety valves.
